Where to store medicine at home: a practical safety guide
Choose a dedicated, dry, cool place protected from light and out of reach of children and animals. Always follow package and leaflet instructions for special conditions.

Short answer: dry, cool, protected and out of reach
Brazilian Anvisa and Ministry of Health guidance recommends a dedicated, dry, cool place protected from light and out of reach of children and animals. Bathrooms, kitchen shelves near a stove, spaces under a sink and the inside of a car often expose packages to moisture, heat or access risk.
The main rule remains the package and patient leaflet. Some products need specific conditions and should not go into a refrigerator simply because it seems cooler.
If the package requires refrigeration or another special condition, follow it exactly and ask a pharmacist or manufacturer when in doubt.
How to choose a place at home
Read the label and leaflet
Look for temperature, light, moisture and other conditions stated by the manufacturer.
Choose a dedicated space
Prefer a stable, clean and dry cabinet or box, separate from food, cleaning products and personal care items.
Protect people and animals
Keep medicine out of children's and animals' reach and sight. Use a locked place when necessary.
Record where it is
Save the room, cabinet or box in Farmacinha so packages do not need to be spread around the home.
What to avoid
- Bathrooms and other humid places.
- Shelves near a stove, oven, window or direct sunlight.
- Spaces under a sink or beside cleaning products.
- The refrigerator door or freezer area without specific instructions.
- Removing labels or transferring contents into unidentified containers.
Use the refrigerator only when instructed
Medicine labeled for room temperature should not be refrigerated on your own. Likewise, a product that requires refrigeration should not remain outside it.
Anvisa recommends following the conditions on the leaflet and label. If a product was exposed to heat, freezing or another condition outside the recommendation, do not judge stability by appearance alone; ask a pharmacist, manufacturer or responsible healthcare professional.
A simple household review
- Keep every medicine in its original package with a readable label.
- Review expiration, quantity and storage place without turning the inventory into directions for use.
- Separate expired or unused items for the correct disposal route.
- Update Farmacinha when a package moves to another cabinet or box.
Farmacinha organizes packages, dates and places entered by you. It does not recommend storage for a specific medicine or decide whether a product exposed outside its stated conditions remains suitable.
